You Already Have a Domain Name

Since the people asking this question have already bought their own domain name, I will proceed on that assumption. If this is not true for you,  to find out how you can go about getting your own domain.

You Already Have a Web Hosting Account

A web host is basically a company that has specially configured computers that are permanently connected to the Internet. They allow you to place your website on their system (usually because you are paying them a monthly fee to let you do this) so that it can be viewed by others on the Internet.

If you don't have a web host, you'll need to sign up for one before you can point your domain anywhere. For this article to be relevant, your web host must allow you to use your own domain name for your site, which is the case for all commercial web hosts (as far as I know). 

Steps to Associating Your Domain Name with Your Website

Get Your Web Host's Name Servers

The first thing you'll need to do is to find out the list of name servers used by your web host.

"Name servers", or "DNS servers", loosely speaking, are the things that will translate your domain name to the actual location of your website. A little example will make this clear. Let's say you type a domain like "thesitewizard.com" into your web browser. In order to display the website associated with thesitewizard.com, the browser needs to know the real address of the site. Appearances to the contrary, the Internet does not actually use names for addresses, but series of numbers, like 127.0.0.1, called IP addresses. Name servers translate the domain name you and I use to the actual numeric IP address used by the machines on the Internet.
When you sign up with a commercial web host, they will configure their name servers so that it will furnish your website's real IP address when there is a query for your domain name. As such, in order for your domain to be found on the Internet, you must link your domain to your web host's name servers.
(There's a bit more to this than that, but I'm sure you're not here for a long boring technical lecture on how things operate on the Internet. Suffice it to say, in order for your domain name to resolve, a lot of different computers are involved, including your Internet provider's name servers, your registry operator's name servers, your web host's name servers, etc. Don't worry. Much of it is automatic. All you need to do to make it all work is given below.)

The easiest (though not necessarily fastest) way to find out the name servers used by your web host for your domain is to ask them. A faster way is to look for the information yourself in either the email sent to you by your host when you first signed up with them, or from the documentation on your web host's site. If you have no idea where to get the information, contact your web host and ask them for the "DNS servers" or "name servers" to use for your domain.
The list of name servers will often look like ns1.example.com, ns2.example.com, and so on, where "example.com" will probably be replaced by some other domain name used by your web host for their servers.
Your web host may give you 2 or more name server addresses. Note down all these names. Better still, keep the email or web page containing these names open on your computer so that you can cut and paste them later. You'll need to enter these names, exactly as given, into your registrar's system.

Enter the Name Servers into Your Registrar's Settings for Your Domain

Once you have the list of name servers, go to your domain name registrar and log into their system. You will obviously need the login name and password that you created when you first registered your domain.

Once logged in, you will need to look for some option to either set your domain's name servers or change them. Every registrar has a different way of doing this, and there is no standard method, so it's not possible for me to give you a detailed blow-by-blow account of how to get to the appropriate screen. (Even if I did, my description will quickly become out-of-date since registrars, like all webmasters, change their site design every now and then.) What I'll do instead is give you some idea of what to look for.

In general, try the following to get to the page on your registrar's site that lets you modify the name servers:

• Find a way to list all your domains in the registrar's site. Sometimes this can be found in a "My Domains" page, or a "Domain Manager" page, or something similarly named.
• Select the domains for which you want to set the name servers. Sometimes this involves checking a box beside your domain name in the list of names. Alternatively, if you only have one domain name, you may even be able to click the domain name to get to the settings screen.
• Some registrars have a "Manage DNS" menu link, or a "DNS" button, or a "Nameservers" button. If you see such a link or button, that's probably the one that you will need to click. Basically look for things that say "DNS" or "Name Servers" or "Nameservers", whether to "set" it, "change" it, "manage" it, "modify" it or some other thing to that effect.

Once you manage to find the correct page to change your name servers, you will probably see a form that lets you enter things like your "Primary Name Server", "Secondary Name Server", "Tertiary Name Server" and maybe even more (like a fourth, fifth and sixth name server as well). The exact words used may not be the same, but it should mean basically your first name server, second name server, and so on.

Put your first name server from your list, usually the name beginning with "ns1", into the "Primary Name Server" field. Then type your second name server, the name beginning with "ns2", into the "Secondary Name Server" field. And so on. A domain name should have at least 2 name servers associated with it. Some web hosts give you more, others only 2. Some registrars allow you to enter up to 6 names, others only 2. If you only have 2 nameservers to enter, but your registrar gives you 6 fields, just enter the first 2 and leave the other fields blank. If you have 3 nameservers to enter, but your registrar only allows you to enter 2, just enter the 2. Don't worry about the fields you didn't get to use, or the extra name servers that your web host provided that you couldn't enter. Your domain will work fine without those extras. They are there to provide a bit of redundancy, so that your site will still work if the first name server fails.

If you cannot find the place to set your name servers, or you don't want to just blunder around the registrar's website looking for the correct option to try, look for the "Help" or "FAQ" documentation on your registrar's site. This is such a basic procedure that everyone needs to do that they are likely to have some sort of guide on their site, if only to avoid having to answer the same question over and over again from their customers.

At worst, if you are completely lost, and dare not poke around in the registrar's site because you're afraid you'll change something you shouldn't, write to the registrar to ask them for help. Don't expect a fast reply though. Some of them take days to reply, and often only to point you to the relevant documentation on their site. As is the case for many other things, if you want something done fast, you'll need to figure it out yourself. Hopefully the tips in this section will give you enough information so that you know what links/buttons to look for and click.

Once you've set your name servers, you're done. Yes, you read that right. That's all there is to it. You'll have to wait a bit, though, before you can access your website using your domain name. Just because you set it at your registrar level doesn't mean that the rest of the Internet knows your domain has a new address. It takes a while, sometimes up to 2 or more days for every machine in the world to catch up with the changes.

Same design and templates with little tweaks in them. Or better I should say that they are lack of flexibility, I know that there are thousands of Premium looking free themes are available but Honestly speaking Blogger is not a Flexible Platform for Professionals.

Comments Section: The comments section of Blogger is Way too unprofessional. You have to make an account to comment or at least login to your google account that irritates user. Also the design of Comment Box looks old-fashioned and outdated.

Google Owns Your Site: This is the worst thing I have seen in Blogger platform that you have very less control on your site. Google have all right to delete your site anytime if you violate even one of their rules. sometimes They even delete the whole Blogger account of that person.

If you have backup of your blog than it is okay you can import your blogger site to WordPress. But if you are careless and do not take backup usually, you are screwed man. You lost your website and all the content, you can recover the content from Google cache but it will be a very long process.

Lack of Plugins: Blogger do not supports Plugins, this means that you have to make changes in code of template every time you want to add some new feature. Unlike WordPress where you can just install and activate Plugins and if you want to remove it you can just uninstall it. But in Blogger you have to find that whole code and remove it Which makes it Unprofessional.

Limited Number of Blogs: You can Just have 100 blogs per account not even a single blog more than that.

Limited size of Page: This is irritating but blogger allows page having size below 1 MB for some specific pages for example: Homepage, Archives Page. If page size is more than that visitors will get error message saying ”006 Please contact Blogger Support”.

You will have to lower the number of posts on homepage. I haven’t Explained all advantages and disadvantages because I want to compare them in both Blogger and WordPress. So Lets Compare them:

First comes Blogger where you can only have members up to 100 Team Members per blog (That is a big disadvantage I think). But when it comes to WordPress you can have unlimited numbers of Authors, Editors, Contributors and subscribers which is a Plus Point for WordPress.

WordPress have Professional looking Dashboard which can also be customized in many ways but when you see the Dashboard of Blogger you can analyze yourself that it looks like that if it is made in old HTML.

Yes it is a fact that you can handle all of your blog from one dashboard of Blogger.com but it is bit unprofessional and looks like webpage made in HTML.

Here WordPress Wins Because its Dashboard is Awesome in look and yes you can also handle all of your self-hosted wordpress blogs if you connect them with WordPress.com account by one click.

Storage:

When it comes to Storage you are only provided 1GB for hosting your pictures and other content with picasa web on Blogger, or other wise you have to host your pictures and videos on some other storage means.

WordPress is known for Self-Hosted Blogging platform and it is best in this thing. You can have much storage which comes with your hosting package (which is usually more than 10 GB) so this is another Plus Point for WordPress.

Loading Speed:

Well in this case Blogger got a Plus point because it is hosted on Google servers and is managed by Blogger team so it loads too much faster and yes you can also increase page loading speed by making some really cool and fast theme.

WordPress sites can also load faster incase you use plugins and themes in a Better way and take advantages of that also you can use paid or free CDN services to make your blog load faster. You can make your site Load more faster by making fast custom theme for your WordPress blog.

Site Control:

WordPress have got better site control because everything is in your hands because you are administrator of your blog and hosting account and you can add or remove themes, Plugins, content, etc. but you have to take backup time to time for making everything extra secure.

In case of Blogger as I explained above, Google owns your content and site, you control your domain only and yes if you will violate one of their rules, you will get your content and site dumped into Trash Bin.

And it becomes much bigger nightmare when you have not taken any backup of your blog and can’t restore it. Some time your Blogger account can also be deleted and you are ruined in that case.

Support:

This is the only thing where they both are doing good because the Support of both platforms is Awesome and fast. You can just go to relevant forum for help and ask for Help.

Themes:

This is best ever thing for which WordPress is known. You can apply thousands and thousands of professional WordPress themes from WordPress repository and also there are Hundreds and Thousands of Premium themes which are responsive and can help you lot to customize the design of your website or blog.

On the other side I haven’t listened about any Premium Blogger template, maybe there are some of them. But I have heard about thousands of free blogger templates and because of this “Free” factor most developers do not Develop that Awesometemplates for the use of other Bloggers for free.

Another thing that in WordPress if you want to test 10-15 themes to check which one will fit your needs you can do that by simple clicking and checking all the themes one by one and nothing from the design of your website gets disturbed Even if you want to get back to the first theme you were having on your blog.

But on Blogger if you have changed your theme you have to change each and everything according to it and yes you have to change them by playing around and Tweaking with the code of template you applied. And if you think that you can test 10-15 themes in nearly 15-20 minutes than you are Totally wrong.

Business:

If you want to run a Blog for fun then its ok, you can go with Blogger because it is free and its easy for beginners but if you want to Maximize your business than you should must go with wordpress because Going with Blogger Platform will probably ruin your business.

Conclusion:

At the end of the day I would suggest Blogger if you are a Newbie and want to have some experience in blogging but WordPress if you are Professional. Why am I suggesting that because I think WordPress as a most flexible Platform for blogging as well as Business and portfolio websites.

Lets take an Example if you want to make an online store, it is not easy for you to make an Online Store with Blogger but it is Much easier if you go with WordPress. You can make Different kind of websites from Professional Portfolio to Static and Dynamic websites, you can do this by doing little tweaks in the Themes and Plugins of your wordpress Blog.

One more thing that it is used and Suggested by Biggest News Sites, Journals, Blogs and Top bloggers and Affiliate marketers of the world.
